About Room 16

Room 16 is the main stream new entrant class at Kawakawa Primary. All the students are 5 years old and love coming to school and learning with Whaea Narelle, our kaiako. We are hands-on class that are learning to take responsibility for our learning and become our own teachers. We are discovering our learning skills through a process called learning through play. Have a look and see how we extend and challenge ourselves.

Waka waka e! e!

Room 16 has been problem solving together to create waka. We first had a discussion around what would help our waka to float and then talked about what resources could be effective. Whaea Narelle then gave us some resources and we had to plan how we could use them. We then had a trip into history and looked at past waka and from there were able to create our own! We found out that some of our flags made our waka tip over and started to wonder how we could add an awesome, big flag to our waka.

Let's make a river!

Room 16 has been looking at how rivers are made so we decided to make our own. We had to work as a team to think of how we could make a river that would have a flow of water. Some of us were successful and the water held!

Student led conferences

Room 16 has been preparing for our student led conferences. We have been looking at what we are good at (our stars) and what we are working on (our stairs). We have talked about this with our buddies to practice and have chosen what we thought in reading, writing and maths. We also discussed how our whanau could help and why learning is important to us.
These are some precious pictures of when our whanau came into listen to our awesome learning journey so far.
